MKV Tag Editor is a powerful MKV, MKA, MKS and MK3D tag editor for Matroska container video and audio files. Features: Edit Matroska tags in MKV, MKA, MKS and MK3D files. Edit tags for chapters. Manage cover arts. Search for and download movie details and poster from The Movie Data Base with a couple of clicks. Batch rename files by their tags.

I don't know if any of you have run into this problem yet, but showtime uses the 'title' tag in MKV files and sometimes this tag has a weird or otherwise uninformative name.

I have searched around and can't really find ANY easy MKV tag editor to make editing these tags simple and quick. I've submitted a request in the issue tracker to support renaming files in Showtime (and also update the MKV title tag when doing so), but until/if that is implemented, I thought I would share what I've found to be the easiest way so far to edit the title tag of MKV files.

First install the free package known as mkvtoolnix. Open the mkvmerge application, go to 'File' --> 'Header Editor' and a new window will open. Drag and drop the MKV file you want to edit onto this window.

You should see 'segment information' on the left side, expand that option and you will see 'title' under it. Select that and you will see a box on the right side where you can edit the 'title' tag. change it to whatever you want, then finish by going to 'File' then 'save' to make the change.

Doing it this way will not require remuxing the MKV. You can verify the change by re-opening the file again in the header editor (or checking the file in the Showtime playlist)...

Hi,

I've made this patch to force showtime to show file name, not metadata title.
I'm using this patch for a while and problem with weird names definitively solved. I already submitted this patch once, but was ignored.

The real problem is an incorrect title in the MKV metadata.

The main issue is that currently there is no streamlined tool specifically designed to quickly edit MKV metadata, and for some reason people use a lot of weird metadata titles, probably because they are too lazy to make a proper one.

Anyway, I'd suggest this as an option rather than being hardcoded on/off.

UPDATE: For those interested, MediaMonkey v4 has extended it's metadata management to not only support music files, but now video files such as AVI, MP4, WMV and .

This software also has a tool to rename the title tag with the filename automatically, which should make correcting incorrect MKV titles very easy, as well as the cover art etc I suppose.

Only drawback is that it is a paid software, and specifically MKV support isn't integrated yet, but I'm hoping it will come in the near future. This would make management of the metadata a lot easier, and solve this problem from it's source.

If I remember, I'll update and let everyone know if/when MKV support is added, or if I find anything else just as good.

As I wrote in the announcement about a month ago I plan to do a lot of rework in the Showtime's metadata system.

I've done some of it already but it's not pushed to master just yet because I'm changing stuff like crazy and it affects the sqlite db schema, etc.

Anyway, one of the things i've done is to remove the code that uses title from movie metadata found in the file (still uses it for audio though).
Instead Showtime parses the filename so Casino.Royale.2006.nHD.720p.x264.AAC.MatRoska.NhaNc3.mkv instead becomes Casino Royale and the year is also extracted.
This can then be fed into online metadata lookup such as themoviedb.org, etc

Hi,

Mkv Metadata Editor

That's good news, but I still prefer to use plain file names as titles, I use to rename all my files to meaning names, including numbers, such series season and episode number: 'Serie ABC S01E01'
It is faster to rename a file than editing metadata with any editor. Besides, not everyone uses windows (MediaMonkey and others) I do not, never will though.
