Backup Protected Game CD/DVDs
Index
Introduction

The previous The Best CD-Reader article was totally outdated as we now know more about the SafeDisc & SecuROM protections than back when it was written. There for we've created this article on how to make a working backup of a Protected Game CD or when this is not possible, because of hardware limitation, to at least be able to play a Protected Game CD from an imperfect backup.

It is still possible to create working Backups of most Copy Protected game CDs without the use of additional patches. The only thing required is a CD-Reader & CD-Writer which can read & write RAW DAO & Sub-Channel Data and software which supports writing in RAW Mode with Sub-Channel Data.

These software packages are:

  • Alcohol 120% - The best available Game Backup software currently available!

When it is not possible to select the RAW Mode then most likely the CD-Reader or CD-Writer does not support this mode. It is however still possible to make a backup but additional tools are required to remove the actually protection (see Non RAW Backups).

Identifying a CD/DVD Protection

There are a few utilities available which can identify which CD Protection is being used on your game CDs.

Here is a complete overview of these tools, available @ CD Media World:

The best tool available is Protection ID as it detects all available CD protections & is updated regularly! Clony XXL is also a good alternative but is not updated anymore!

Non RAW Backups

If your CD-Writer/Reader does not support RAW writing/Reading then it is not possible to make a 100% working standalone backup but it is still possible to play a backup using these utilities:

Executable Unwrappers
These tools are able to remove the CD Protection from the main executable which starts the game.

  • unSafeDisc v1.5.5 - SafeDisc
  • unSafeDisc v2.40.10 & 2.51.xx - SafeDisc v2
  • UnSecuROM v1.0 - SecuROM & SecuROM v2
Protection Emulators
These tools run in the background and intercept calls from the CD Protection to the CD-Reader, to check if the original CD is in the reader, and always tell that everything is ok.
  • DAEMON Tools v4.x - SafeDisc, SafeDisc v2, SecuROM, SecuROM v2 & LaserLock
  • PlayBackup v2.1 - SafeDisc v2, SecuROM & SecuROM v2
  • InseKtors v1.1 - SafeDisc & SafeDisc v2
NOTE:The creators of the SafeDisc protection have added a 'blacklist' feature into their protection to detect if one of the above Protection Emulators is active in memory. This can be the reason that a game is not working (even original CD's), just upgrade to the latest version (if available) or temporarily disable the emulator!

For example MaxPayne v1.01 was blacklisting DAEMON Tools v2.74 & PlayBackup v2.1. The MaxPayne blacklist problem was again fixed in DAEMON Tools v2.79. But keep in mind that this process will happen over and over again. It's just a cat & mouse game with every new version of the SafeDisc v2/v3 protection!

CD-Writers supporting RAW DAO & Sub-Channel Data

Most of the Philips, Lite-On & Plextor CD-Writers can handle any CD Protection, a lot of CD-Writer manufacturers have been using Philips drives in their own drives so these will also work fine. Here is an overview of the Philips CD-Writers to date:

Here are a few websites which go deeper into this matter:

  • BlindWrite - Tested CD-Writers
A real good overview of CD-Writers which support DA0-RAW modes.
  • CD Media World - CD-Writer Technology
The best available resource to see which CD-Writer manufacturer is using which drive on the inside!
  • [email protected]@K - SafeDisc 2 Compatible Writer List
A very complete overview of CD-Writers which can handle the SafeDisc v2 CD-Protection.
  • CloneCD - Manufacturers of CD recorders
A complete overview of all available CD-Writers which are compatible with CloneCD (and in which mode they work the best).
  • CD Mate - Supported CD recorders
A complete overview of all available CD-Writers including which writing modes they support!
  • RAW Writing Mode List for RICOH CD-R/RW Drives
A complete overview of Ricoh CD-Writers which can handle DA0-RAW mode.
Alcohol 120% Backup Instructions
Here are the instructions to make a working backup of most Protected CDs using Alcohol 120% in combination with a CD-Reader/CD-Writer which can both can handle RAW DAO:
  • First identify which CD/DVD protection is being used on your Game CD/DVD (see Identifying a CD/DVD Protection).
  • Startup Alcohol 120%.
  • From the [Main] Menu click 'Copy Wizard'.
  • Select the CD/DVD Device from which the Game CD is being read.
  • Select the CD/DVD protection from the Datatype pull-down button at the bottom of the window.
This will auto-configure Alcohol 120% for the optimum backup settings.
  • When ready Click the [Next >] button.
  • Select 'Image Location' where the Game CD Image should be stored.
  • When ready Click the [Next >] button.
  • Select the 'CD/DVD Recorder' to which the CD Image will be written to.
All settings are again auto-configured for the optimum backup settings.
  • When ready Click the [Start] button.
  • Play the game!
NOTE:Keep in mind that some CD/DVD protections, like TAGES & StarForce, can NOT be backed up.
CloneCD Backup Instructions

Here are the instructions to make a working backup of most Protected CDs using CloneCD 4 in combination with a CD-Reader/CD-Writer which can both can handle RAW DAO:

  • Create the following directory (if it exists already empty it):
    • <TempDir>: C:TEMPCD
  • Create a CD-Image using CloneCD 4 with these Game CD settings:
    • Data Read Settings Tab:
      • Set Read Speed Data to 1x (176 kByte/s)
      • Select Read SubChannel Data from Data Tracks (default)
      • Select Regenerate Data Sectors (default)
    • Audio Read Settings Tab:
      • Set Read Speed Audio to 1x (176 kByte/s)
      • Set Audio Extraction Quality to Medium (Fast) (default)
      • Select Read SubChannel Data from Audio Tracks (default)
      • UnSelect Only read the first Session (default)
    • Error Handling Tab:
      • Set Fast Error Skip to Automatic (default)
      • Set Sector Skip to 100 (default)
      • UnSelect Abort on Read Error (default)

  • When ready burn the modified CD-Image a CD-R using CloneCD 4 with these Game CD settings:
    • Set Write Speed to any desired speed
    • Select Don't Repair SubChannel Data (default)
    • Select Always close last Session
  • Play the game!

Here are the instructions to make a working backup of most Protected CDs using CloneCD 3 in combination with a CD-Reader/CD-Writer which can both can handle RAW DAO:

  • Create the following directory:
    • <TempDir>: C:TEMPCD
  • Create a CD-Image using CloneCD 3 with these settings:
    • Set Read Speed to 1x (176 kByte/s)
    • Select Read SubChannel Data from Data Tracks
    • Select Read SubChannel Data from Audio Tracks
    • Select Fast Error Skip
      • Set Read Retry to at least 5
      • Set Error correction to None
    • UnSelect Don't report bad sectors
    • UnSelect Intelligent Bad Sector Scanner
  • When ready burn the CD-Image a CD-R using CloneCD 3 with these settings:
    • Set Write Speed to any desired speed
    • Select RAW DAO
    • Select Don't Repair SubChannel Data
    • UnSelect Simulate Writing (if available)
    • Select Burn Proof/Just Link (if available)
    • unSelect Perform Laser Power Calibration
    • unSelect Wait until Buffers are full
    • Select Always close last Session
  • Play the game!
NOTE:CloneCD v4 includes a CloneCD Tray utility which is active when your startup your PC. This utility includes a feature Hide CDR Media which can be very helpful when playing a backup from a CD-Writer. Some games try to detect if they are run from a CD-R media and this tool let's them think it is an original CD.

Keep in mind that some CD/DVD protections, like TAGES & StarForce, can NOT be backed up.

Backup Hints

Here are some general hints when making a 1:1 CD-Copy:

  • Use your CD-Writer to also read the CD-Image - In most cases the CD-Writer can handle more protections!
  • To avoid coasters always make a CD-Image on harddrive before writing it to a CD-R.
  • Read the CD-Image at 1x or at a maximum of 8x speed. Reading the CD-Image at 1x speed takes a long time to complete but it is the safest speed to correctly read the image from any CD-Reader. Most modern CD-Readers can handle faster speeds. Just experiment!
  • CD-Writer software like Adaptec Easy CD Creator will NEVER be able to copy protected CDs and in most cases only interferes with other CD-Writers software! Software like CloneCD, Nero & CDRWIN are far better products!
Additional CD-Checks
The instructions shown on this page only show how to remove a CD-Protection, like SafeDisc or SecuROM, from the main executable but most of the games also have a CD-Check in the main executable. In this case the original or backup CD is required to play the game. No-CD Patches are needed to bypass the additional CD-Check(s), these are available at GameCopyWorld.

  1. Today's video I will show you how to rip your PS1 games to your PC's hard drive. From there, you can use the image for your modded consoles or PS1 emulation.
  2. The following table contains known PS1 games that had 2 or more discs. This table is sortable, with the number of discs-per-game following the Title in Column 2. Following are two additional tables: Compilations of Final Fantasy; and 16 'issues' of PlayStation Underground Magazine. These games typically share immersive storylines (many are RPG's) and plentiful FMV. The table currently contains.

Once the disc image is mounted, you can run the game the same as you would if it were a CD inserted in a disc drive. Either click the game's executable icon or click the option to launch the game in the startup menu. If the game has multiple discs, make sure you have a disc image for all discs.

This page explains how to rip GameCube and Wii games and/or saves to be used on Dolphin. Ripping games and saves using a Wii or Wii U console will require you to have homebrew software installed. See Homebrew Channel for instructions on how to use it, and see Homebrew setup for installation instructions. The term 'vWii' means a Wii U console running in Wii mode.

Ripping Discs Using a Computer

Certain old models of PC DVD drives are able to rip game discs with Rawdump or Friidump.

It's generally easier and faster to rip game discs via a Wii console, if you have one:

Ripping Discs Using CleanRip

CleanRip can rip a game disc to an SD card or an external USB storage device. It requires your Wii or vWii system to have the Homebrew Channel.

GameCube Discs

No GameCube titles take up more than 1.36 GiB (Gibibyte, or 10243 bytes). It's generally a good idea to set Chunk Size to max, so that your ISO isn't split into parts. GameCube discs can store a maximum of 1.36 GiB, so the entire ISO can fit on a FAT32 drive. Simply follow the instructions on-screen and you'll be able to put the game straight from the SD card or USB drive into Dolphin.

Wii Discs

In order to rip a Wii disc, a storage device with more than 4.7 GiB of free space is recommended for single layer, 8.54 GiB for dual layer. However, by dividing the disc into chunks, an SD card with even a single gibibyte of free space is sufficient.

At the CleanRip Setup screen, set Chunk Size to 'Max', and New device per chunk to 'No' is recommended with SD cards or external USB storage devices large enough to hold the entirety of the ripped disc file at once. Otherwise, set Chunk Size to max possible ('1GB', '2GB', '3GB', or 'Max') and set New device per chunk to 'Yes' and when CleanRip is asking for the next device, remove it from the Wii and move the first or so ISO file to free up space and use it again. When all pieces have been received, check in the next subsection.

  • CleanRip will split the ripped disc file with more than 4 GiB in file size regardless to fit the FAT, FAT16, or FAT32 file systems. These file systems have a max file size of 4 GiB. To remedy this, it is recommended to rip discs to a USB external NTFS formatted storage device (as Wii cannot read NTFS formatted SD cards). The NTFS file system has a theoretical max file size of 16 EiB (Exabyte), or 16,777,216GiB.
  • Certain Wii discs are dual layer (or DVD9) instead of single layer (or DVD5). CleanRip will need to be configured in order to rip those kinds of discs. At the Wii Disc Ripper Setup screen, set Dual Layer to Yes. The rip will take roughly double the time than usual Wii discs of 4.38 GiB as the dual layer ISOs are 7.93 GiB in size.

Joining Split Files

A disc image in split parts will need to be joined before dolphin can read it. A simple command from command prompt and terminal can do it! Use the example command for your system. Use the 'cd' command to change directory to the file's location. The example command assumes CleanRip's 'GAMEID.part#.iso' filename nomenclature, and creates 'GAMEID.iso'. The part files can be deleted after the joined file is created.

Ripping Discs Using USB Loader GX

A Wii or vWii with the latest version of USB Loader GX and certain cIOS (such as d2x-cios) installed can rip Wii game discs. The Wii system may also be able to rip GameCube game discs as long as DIOS MIOS is installed. Wiis sold after late 2011 and Wii Us lack the GameCube controller and memory card ports, and can make no use of DIOS MIOS. CleanRip is recommended over USB Loader GX for not requiring any cIOS and it does not leave out any data when ripping (USB Loader GX leaves out unused data).

The USB Loader GX will ask the user two options when inserting a game disc: Install or Mount DVD drive; choose 'Install'. It will begin the ripping process to the storage device:

  • For Wii: X:wbfsGAMEID_*GAMEID.wbfs (and GAMEID.wbf1 as continuation file, if source is over 4,194,272 KiB)
    • Dolphin build version 3.5 and later can accept Wii games in WBFS format.
  • For GameCube: X:games* [GAMEID]game.iso (NOTE: file system must be FAT32)

Extracting discs from the Wii U eShop

To create an ISO image from an eShop Wii title, a CFW-enabled Wii U, a Wii U NAND dump (specifically the OTP and SEEPROM), an external hard drive formatted by the console with the Wii game(s) installed, nfs2iso2nfs and DumpsterU are required.

  1. Insert the drive into a computer with DumpsterU installed. Do not format if prompted.
  2. Open DumpsterU. Select your drive and OTP/SEEPROM locations.
  3. A game list should appear. Double-click the Wii game you want to extract and select a safe location in 'Output Folder'.
  4. Select 'Dump Game'. After DumpsterU finishes, navigate to the chosen folder.
  5. Navigate using a command line/terminal to the content folder in your dump (for example, Rhythm Heaven Fever: 101B0700gamecontent)
  6. Run nfs2iso2nfs.exe -dec to begin the conversion process.
  7. The game should appear as game.iso in the same directory.

Rename the output to whatever you wish and copy it to your Wii dump directory.

The image will most likely be missing its UPDATE partition and have a few minor errors. This is normal.

You might be able to dump the Wii game to your computer using another program such as Dumpling or DDD, however DumpsterU is the fastest method and is fairly straightforward.

Exporting Wii Channels

In order to turn a channel installed on a Wii or vWii into a WAD file that can be played in Dolphin, follow this guide. When asked if you want to fakesign the ticket or TMD, you should press B. (Most fakesigned WAD files do work in Dolphin, but they don't work better than correctly signed WAD files, and Dolphin may show warnings about them.)

Alternatively, if you do not want to use WAD files, you can copy the whole NAND memory of a console into Dolphin by following the NAND Usage Guide. This not only copies all channels that are installed on the console, but afterwards, you can also transfer channels between the console and Dolphin by using an SD card and the Wii Menu's data management screen.

Retrieving Game Saves

GameCube Memory Card

A homebrewed Wii with GameCube memory card ports or GameCube with SD Gecko is required.

Rip Ps1 Games From Disc Tool

Download GameCube/Wii Memory Manager (GCMM for short) and launch it through Homebrew Channel on the Wii. It's a homebrew app that can transfer save files between a real GameCube Memory Card and an SD card. It can extract an individual save as .GCI file or dump the entire contents (RAW or batch dump .GCI files) from a real memory card to the root of SD card. For the purpose of this guide you should extract what you need for Dolphin onto the SD card. Then they should be placed into GC for Dolphin to use while emulating a game. It is also possible for the data that was created with Dolphin to be added back into the real GameCube Memory Card using GCMM and an SD card.

Wii/vWii Internal Storage

Rip Ps1 Disc

This section is for ripping individual saves to be used on Dolphin. To dump an entire Wii's internal storage for use with Dolphin, skip this section and move ahead to NAND Usage Guide.

Rip Ps1 Games From Disc To Usb

Download SaveGame Manager GX and launch it through Homebrew Channel on the Wii or vWii. It's a homebrew app that can transfer save files between the console's internal storage and an SD card. It can extract an individual save from the Wii's internal storage for Dolphin to use. Like GCMM, it is possible for save files that were created in Dolphin to be added back to the Wii by selecting the game in Dolphin to export the Wii save into a X:privatewii[GAMEID] format, then adding it back into the real console's NAND using SaveGame Manager GX and an SD card.
